REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) came into force on June 1st 2007. REACH is the new European regulation controlling the manufacture, import and marketing of chemical products.
Its prime objective is the protection of human health and the environment. REACH requires the chemical industry to undertake a comprehensive inventory of every substance, including:
- chemical, physical, toxicological and ecological properties,
- precautions of use,
- risk evaluation.
REACH introduces the concept of use supported by the manufacturer. REACH therefore encompasses any chemical product manufactured, imported, or marketed within the European territory, and all its uses by industry and by consumers.
Accordingly, when a substance becomes effectively registered, its SDS must state precisely the uses covered, and set out any precautions to be taken.

The REACH registration process started on June 1st 2008 with the pre-registration of “phase-in” products. This is followed by three key stages for the registration of the pre-registered substances.
